Chapter 20

Pam breathed a sigh of relief when she received a text from Shadow to let her know they were on the way back to Hopedale. He didn’t explain why they’d taken so long, but he did say Damon had been thrown a curveball. Pam knew it was something huge. Especially when he told her Damon’s brother was coming with his son and daughter.

Pam asked about Malcolm’s wife, but Shadow told her it was way too much to explain in a text. She had to wait until they returned to hear the whole story.

With the news they would be expecting extra guests, Keith sent Crash to one of the bunkhouses to make sure everything was ready for company. Emily wanted to make sure Malcolm and the children were comfortable since they weren’t sure how long they would be staying.

By the time they arrived, it was a little before midnight. Damon seemed drained, Malcolm was obviously angry, and the kids looked lost. Since it was late, Emily escorted the kids to the rooms where Pam and Damon had been sleeping. Pam figured it was mostly to give the adults a chance to discuss the situation. When Emily returned to the kitchen, she assured Malcolm the kids were comfortable and resting.

“Are you sure we aren’t intruding?” Malcolm asked as Emily put a cup of coffee in front of him.

“Not at all. You’re not the first surprise house guest we’ve had over the years, and I’m sure you won’t be the last.” Emily smiled and touched Malcolm’s shoulder.

Once the introductions were done, Damon, Malcolm, Trunk, and Shadow told them everything. The reason Malcolm left with the kids was because Damon didn’t want to leave his brother alone in the house with Gail and Alastair. Not because he was worried about them but because he was concerned about what Malcolm might do if Gail pushed too hard.

Unfortunately, Gail’s kids overheard everything that happened. Nobody knew they’d come in through the back door just before everything blew up. Since nobody knew they were home, it was a complete shock to everyone when they insisted on going with Malcolm.

“I just don’t understand what all this would have to do with Pam’s kidnapping.” Emily sat across the table from Pam and Damon.

“Dad, I mean Alastair… We got an email with a picture of a woman we didn’t know. It turns out it was Pam, and whoever is involved thought we knew her.” Malcolm shrugged.

“Obviously, they don’t know much about our family if they thought we were in contact. Plus, when she was taken, Pam and I weren’t together,” Damon interjected.

“Have you been able to get in touch with Vladimir Yugov?” Pam asked Nick.

“No, he’s out of town, but there’s a woman housesitting for him. She said he didn’t say when he would return. At first, I thought she was his wife, but her name is Kelsey Oliver,” Nick explained, but Pam was distracted by Malcolm’s reaction.

“I’m sorry? Did you say Kelsey Oliver?” Malcolm’s voice quivered.

“Yes, do you know her?” Nick asked.
